How to rust a metal.

Rust is the result of the corrosion of iron, however nowadays we use Rust to identify when a metal corrodes.

Every metal can rust if it's placed in contact with "right" environment.

With "right" environment we mean a particular fluid and operating conditions, pressure and temperature.

As an example Stainless Steel does not rust, or better corrode if it's placed in contact with fresh water or exposed to the atmosphere, but if it's placed in contact with salt water, water containing high level of chlorides, or in a marine atmosphere it can corrode in a relative short time.

Stainless Steels does not be behave all in the same way, Type SS 304 for example is less resistant than Type SS 316.

Iron if it's not protected by a paint will corrode in the atmosphere due to the action of rainwater, humidity.
