Question: Cathodic Protection of Stainless Steels?

Answer: Cathodic protection on Stainless Steel is not so common. Stainless Steel is selected 'cause are more corrosion resistant than Carbon and Low Alloy Steels and Cathodic Protection is not foreseen in the design. Usually if an high chloride content, with possibility of Pitting corrosion, Crevice and Stress Corrosion Cracking, is foreseen in service the solution is to upgrade the materials to a more corrosion resistant alloys (CRA) like Super Austenitic (SS 904 or 6Mo) or to Duplex, Super Duplex.

 CP on stainless steel is sometimes applied for structures, tanks buried in soil with high chloride content to  avoid the possibility of Pitting and Stress Corrosion Cracking. There are also some example of application of CP on Stainless Steel exposed to fluids with high chloride contents.
