Question: I want to know other materials that can be selected in for equipment and piping asides carbon steel in a CO2 environment on an offshore topsides platform
Answer: The materials selection for an Oil&Gas plant is a function of several factors of which CO2 is one of the most important. Usually the first material considered for a topside is Carbon Steel. An assessment is made to calculate the corrosion rate due to CO2, if present, using the model of DeWaard-Miliams and following modifications. This can be done using one of the several software available, for example the Norsok M-506. If the calculated corrosion rate for carbon steel is too high, considering corrosion allowance and corrosion inhibition, then the selection is moved to CRA alloys (Corrosion Resistant Alloys): eg Stainless Steel, Duplex Stainless Steel, Nickel Alloys.
The selection of the CRA is a function of factors like H2S content and chloride content mainly. To select the materials that can resist to a "Sour Service" is necessary to use the Standard NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 tha gives the limits in terms of partial pressure of H2S, chloride contents, temperature and elemenal sulphur.
So if Carbon Steel is not suitable then the materials that can be selected are the CRA that are all resistant to CO2 corrosion:
Stainless Steel, considering the limits in terms of partial pressure of H2S (1 bar and 60°C for SS 316 for example)
Duplex and SuperDuplex (with limits of 0.1 Bar and 0.2 Bar of partial pressure of H2S)
Nickel alloys (Alloy 625 has no limits in terms of partial pressure of H2S and temperature)
