                                                What is stainless steel made of?

Stainless steel is an alloy based on iron. The chemical element that makes steel "stainless" is Chromium. Above approx 5% of Cr the alloy develop a superficial layer of Chromium oxides that stop, or greatly reduce, the corrosion of Stainless Steel.
