Steel is an alloy of Iron and Carbon. The melting point is a function of the Carbon content of the alloy. As you can see in the Graph below as the Carbon content increases the melting point, upper curve, decreases. Up to approx 2.1 % Carbon the Alloy is Steel, above 2.1 % and up to 4% the alloy is called "cast iron"
